“Hello…I can see…Samantha…Rachel…Sarah…Michael…Adam…Matt…Elizabeth…” the names that your hear come from a popular culture show called 'Play School,' remember this show?
Growing up I was always bemused at the amount of Belinda’s, Kate’s, Michelle’s and Rachel’s in a single class. You were either Belinda with an R or Michelle with a B. I, on the other hand, was like spot the European in a very Anglo-Saxon school.
We are brought into this world without the slightest opportunity to select our names, well of course!
Judging by my name I clearly didn’t choose my name, I would have gone with Carmen or Ashleigh. No, I got stuck with Olga, I was named after my mother's mother, keeping with European tradition. My grandmother was named after the Queen of Russia.
I grew up with the very unoriginal nick names, yet they would stay with me for years. My nic names plural now consists of Oggsie, Olgs, Ogs, Oga (as one cousin still calls me), Ollie and Olé as my parents call me. I did however suggest to my parents in a fit of rage that I was going to change my name at depole (that golden child again).Great way to disrespect my mother was to suggest a name change - not a good idea considering
I was named after her mother after all.
I've grown to live with my name, even if it does sound like I’m some Russian spy. For the record I’m not a spy just your regular suburban girl, living with four characters. Our names shape our personality, and our parents take one look at us at birth and say she looks like an Emma or a James, I mean how is that even possible to look like a name?!
It got me thinking how over the years how there are trends with names depending on what year you were born.
Here are the top 10 names for 2016 for both boys and girls according to
